The Backlash of Tiger Woods

Has marriage become less important to couples?
Martin Dehlinger

This time last year the thought of discussing a Tiger Woods sex scandal would have been laughed at and thought to be ludicrous. Unfortunately we were proven to be naive, whether it was his money that kept things quiet or other factors, the public was widely in the dark about such infidelities. Since his mysterious Thanksgiving night crash of his Cadillac Escalade, things have only gotten worse. Tiger has been forced to slowly rebuild his image despite not playing a single hole of golf until the Masters. A strategically placed series of public statements, apologies and limited interviews have started rebuilding Tigers once legendary status among athletes.

Tiger Woods has won 14 Major tournaments in his career, a number that is not expected to stay there for very long. How will you react when he wins his next big tournament? Everyone wants to watch greatness we are attracted to it like a tractor beam. The Masters ratings for the final day climbed all the way to 3rd all time highest for a golf tournament with a 12 rating. Those numbers are a testament to Woods return and rival Phil Mickelson winning. What will you do when Tiger actually wins a tournament? Should you root for such a historically accomplished player to do well or do you boo him? Regardless of your stance chances are your going to watch or read about how he does. Everyone will; it’s a compelling story, one that didn’t have to happen.

The Tiger Woods Issues speaks to a larger problem in society today. Athletes and Celebrities are usually the ones that get their marital problems printed on the back page of a gossip magazine. Your neighbor’s divorce may not be as interesting as Sandra Bullock and Jesse James’ Marital problems but these things ruin lives. Divorce rate today is estimated at almost 50%. This number is actually in decline but so is the marriage rate. Adultery is not a new trend among athletes or Americans in general. The traditional values of getting married and spending the rest of your life with your partner have become less and less common. Society today is drawn to trashy reality television, is the cast of Jersey Shore a reality in society? If so America has become something that not even Tiger Woods’ therapist could help.

Issues like these are all about self control and personal beliefs. The fact that divorce is commonplace in society is a disaster in itself, let alone the reasons that cause it. We need to re-evaluate the way we carry ourselves and get back to the morals that used to be as commonplace as the very thing we were taught against.
