Going the Distance
Brenham Staff Writer
Going the Distance is a romantic comedy about long distance relationships, staring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. The story starts with Garrett (Justin Long) getting dumped and making his regular routine of beer and trying to beat a video games’ top score made by “ERL” at the local bar with his buddies. He meets Erin (Drew Barrymore) by rudely interrupting her video game so he could play. He finds out that “ERL” was Erin and offered to buy her a drink. After a night of flirtation, buffalo wings, hookah and hook up they exchange numbers over breakfast. They create a typical but cute summer fling. Six weeks later they are forced to separate because Erin’s internship is over, and has to go back to grad school in San Francisco while Garrett has a job that keeps him in New York. They go through the awkward goodbyes, both not knowing how to label their relationship, until Garrett runs in the airport after her, to tell her how he feels. Together they start the long distance relationship.
This movie stays realistic in the hassles of long distances relationships which make it easy for the audience to connect with the characters. This movie has funny dialogue and situations though not recommended for first dates or movie nights with the parents. However, if you enjoy lots of sexual humor, some funny situations and a cute love story then go ahead and Red Box it. I don’t suggest spending 10 bucks on it in the theater.
