Kids' College
Schulenburg event amazes again
For the second year, Kids’ College, held at Blinn College in Schulenburg June 14-18, was a huge hit by all in attendance. This year’s “The Amazing Race” theme drew 53 children from six area schools. Children entering grades 4-8 were eligible.
The children jumped into the realty show setting with activities taking place in rooms decorated to resemble countries such as Italy, Peru, Australia and Egypt. They experienced challenges in math, science, technology, and leadership through hands-on lessons such as building volcanoes in Peru, designing a video and commercial for Australian tourism, crafting and decorating mummies in Egypt, and even cooking an authentic Italian meal.
The students, utilizing various departments of the campus, developed social and leadership skills through a variety of team and group activities. On the final day, they toured Blinn’s campus, visiting the nursing lab and Schaefer Observatory, then showed their parents their Australian commercial and a video with pictures captured throughout the week.
“Parents were thrilled at the idea of having their children learn about different cultures through the many hands-on activities,” campus director Becky Garlick said on the final day.
Garlick added, “And many thanks to SWIFT (Schulenburg and Weimar in Focus Together) Program Coordinator Heather Eilers, who worked tirelessly to assist in making the event a huge success.”
