Crunch Time
Deadline looming for application to new Blinn Veterinary Technology Program
Students interested in starting Blinn College’s new Veterinary Technology program must apply by May 31. Applications can only be obtained by attending one of the three remaining information sessions. The session on May 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center banquet room will include demonstrations. There are also sessions on May 12 at 3 p.m. and May 20 at noon on the Bryan campus. Information sessions will provide potential students with specifics about admission, prerequisites, and curriculum.
The two-year technical program is a unique collaboration between Blinn and the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, which is where second-year students will receive much of their clinical education. Graduates will be eligible to sit for national and state credentialing examinations to become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). The program has a competitive application process that requires previous coursework, veterinarian-supervised clinical experience, and health occupations testing. To register for an information session or to get other information on the new veterinary technology program, go to www.blinn.edu/twe/vet_tech/ or call 979-209-7203.
Veterinary technicians work under the supervision of a veterinarian in much the same way nurses work with physicians. They perform medical tests, assist with treating medical conditions and diseases in animals, and provide general animal care. Registered Veterinary Technicians earn higher salaries than certified veterinary assistants. The U.S. Department of Labor projects faster than average growth with overall job opportunities to be excellent.
The Blinn College Veterinary Technology Program is pending approval of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA-CVTEA).
