Blinn College Commencement set for May 14

            Blinn College will hold commencement for graduates from its four campuses on May 14 at 8 p.m. at Spencer Stadium on the Brenham campus. This year there are 450 candidates receiving two-year associate in arts, associate in science, and associate in applied science degrees and one-year certificates.

            This will be Blinn’s 127th commencement. The college holds commencement once a year for gradu­ates of the previous summer and fall semesters as well as the current spring semester. In case of rain, the ceremonies will be moved to the Brenham High School Auditorium.

            Texas Rep. Lois Kolkhorst will deliver the commencement address and will be introduced by Blinn College President Dr. Daniel Holt, who will also deliver the welcome and presentation of college offi­cials.

            A native of Brenham and Washington County, Kolkhorst serves House District 13, which includes Austin, Grimes, Walker, and Washington counties. Prior to her election in November 2000, she served as CEO for the Washington County Chamber and the Economic Development Foundation of Brenham and she has been a longtime advocate for rural economic development issues. She’s served terms on both the Texas Economic Development Council and the Brazos Valley Workforce Commission.

            The recipients of the Blinn College Professional Associations’ Teaching Excellence Awards for the Brenham and Bryan campuses will be presented by Academic Affairs Vice President Dr. Debra LaCour. The student message will be delivered by honor student Elizabeth Pierce. Dr. John D. Harris, vice president for student services, will present the candi­dates to receive their diplomas and Registrar Julie Maass will announce the graduates.       

            The Blinn College Band under the director of Harry D. Blake will present a concert prior to the gradu­ation ceremony and will perform the processional and recessional. The Blinn Women’s College Choir will perform the National Anthem under the direction of Jennifer Wise. Reverend Randy Wells, pastor of St. John’s A.M.E. Church of Brenham, will deliver the invocation and benediction.
