Spring kickoff concert pairs symphonic bands from Blinn and Houston
The Blinn College Symphonic Band will once again join with the Houston Symphonic Band while presenting the first concert of the spring semester Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center on the Brenham campus. Admission is free to all.
The Blinn band, led by conductor Harry D. Blake, will feature Howard Middleton, sophomore music major from Houston, on the French horn in Blake’s transcription of “Hunter’s Moon” for French horn and Orchestra by Gilbert Vinter.
The Blinn College Symphonic Band clarinet section will perform Russell Ward’s “Clarinet Escapade,” conducted by Dr. Sarah Burke, Blinn’s assistant director of bands. Other special highlights by the Blinn Symphonic Band will be Carl Zeller’s wonderful music from the opera “Der Volgelhandler” and “Hoedown” from the “Symphonic Dances” for Wind Orchestra by composer Yosuke Fukuda.
The second half of the program will feature the Houston Symphonic Band under the direction of Fred Angerstein. They’ve entitled their portion of the program “Humor Through Music” and will open their segment with “Clowns! Clown! Clowns” by David Bobrowitz.
