Bucs offense shine, win second straight
The 17th ranked Blinn Buccaneers put on an offensive clinic in the first half as they defeated the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals 49-33 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference action Saturday afternoon in Athens, TX.
The Blinn offense scored on six of their first seven possessions of the first half, including touchdowns on the first five, giving the Bucs all the scoring they would need for the win. Sophomore quarterback Justin Tuggle (Alpharetta, GA, Boston College) led the Buccaneers offensive attack with four passing touchdowns, giving him 12 on the year.
After taking a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, the Bucs offense completely dominated the second, outscoring the Cardinals 28-0 to take a commanding 42-13 halftime lead. Tuggle got all of his receivers involved in the scoring, throwing touchdown passes to Isaiah Battle (FR, Cypress), Dewayne Peace (FR, Grand Prairie), Otis Seals (FR, Houston) and Xavier Maxwell (FR, Humble). Wide receiver Philander Moore (FR, Austin) also scored on a 39 yard end-around run. The other score of the half came on a 17 yard run by running back Marion Grice (FR, Katy).
The Bucs only score in the second half came in the third quarter on a 15 yard touchdown run by Grice, his second of the game and 11th of the season, making the score 49-20 heading into the final quarter.
The Cardinals would make the game interesting, scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth to make the final score 49-33. The win improved the Bucs overall record to 5-2, and 2-2 in conference play.
The Bucs will next host Kilgore College on Oct. 23 at Bryan High’s Merrill Green Stadium. This marks the second consecutive season the Bucs have played a home game in Bryan, home of the school’s largest campus with over 12,000 students. Kick-off for the Southwest Junior College Football Conference game is set for 3 p.m.
